Have you ever felt like your spiritual life is just a never-ending checklist? Pray, check. Read the Bible, check. Go to church, check. But no matter how many boxes you tick, you still feel like you're falling short? If so, you're not alone. The Apostle Paul, one of the most devoted religious leaders of his time, found himself in the same boat. But he discovered a transformative truth that changed everything – and it can change everything for you too.
The Checklist Trap
I used to think that being right with God was all about following rules and checking off spiritual disciplines. You know, "pray, be generous, study the Bible, worship, share your faith." Depending on who you're reading, there might be anywhere from 7 to 14 spiritual disciplines we're supposed to master. It can feel overwhelming, can't it?
But here's the thing: "If you're not found in Jesus, all that stuff is worthless." That's a hard truth to swallow, especially for those of us who've been taught that if you want something, you have to work for it. But when it comes to our relationship with God, that mentality can lead us down the wrong path.
Paul's Dream: Being Found in Christ
In Philippians 3:9-11, Paul shares his deepest desire:
"...and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead."
Paul had a dream, an ambition. But it wasn't about achieving a perfect scorecard of religious duties. His dream was to be "found in Christ." What does that mean? It means that when God looks at your life, He sees someone whose identity is rooted in Jesus. It means that people around you can see a difference – not because you're following a set of rules, but because your life is displaying the fruit of a genuine relationship with Christ.
The Grace Revolution
So how do we move from a checklist mentality to being found in Christ? It all comes down to one word: grace. Grace is God's gift, His unearned kindness toward us. And it's demonstrated most powerfully in the cross of Jesus Christ.
Imagine trying to carry 18 water bottles in your arms without dropping them. That's what our spiritual lives can feel like when we're trying to earn God's favor through our own efforts. But God offers us something better – a gift so valuable that we have to put down all those water bottles to receive it.
"Our relationship to God is a gift. And religion doesn't teach you that... We started in this relationship with God through grace. We live this relationship with God through grace. And when we get to that point of seeing him face to face, it will be not because we have kept a checklist, but it will be because of his grace."
Knowing Him
Paul's dream wasn't just about being right with God – it was about truly knowing Him. He says in Philippians 3:10, "I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings..."
This kind of knowing goes beyond head knowledge. It's about experiencing Christ's power in our lives – the same power that raised Him from the dead. Think about that for a second. If God has the power to raise someone from the dead, don't you think He has the power to change your life and break the chains that imprison you?
Living It Out: From Death to Resurrection
Paul talks about being "conformed to his death" (Philippians 3:10). This isn't about having a death wish – it's about being willing to lay aside everything that's holding us back from fully experiencing God's power in our lives. Our greed, our lack of humility, our self-centeredness – all of these things need to "die" so that we can experience the resurrection power of God.
Here's the incredible truth: "There is not a single person on the face of the earth today who is beyond the resurrection power of God Almighty. There is nothing in your life... that is beyond God's ability to change."
Next Steps: Stepping Off the Treadmill
Are you tired of running on the spiritual treadmill, never feeling like you're getting anywhere? It's time to step off by faith. Here's how you can start:
1. Recognize that your own efforts can't make you right with God.
2. Accept God's gift of grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
3. Ask God to help you lay aside anything that's holding you back from fully experiencing His power.
4. Commit to knowing Christ more deeply, not just following a set of rules.
5. Trust that God's resurrection power can change your life, no matter what you're facing.
Remember, "You ain't got nothing going on that God can't fix." He doesn't just fix our lives – He recreates us and makes us new in Christ Jesus. That's a dream worth pursuing, don't you think?
